Services

- College Preparation and Mentoring -

Many of our students are either juniors preparing for college, seniors applying for college, or students who have already graduated and are between high school graduation and college. We dedicate a large amount of our time both in and out of meetings to reviewing college essays and writing recommendations for our students.

- Assistance with College Searches and Guidance -

U-Lead Athens’ many dedicated volunteers help students do homework, look for colleges, research majors, fill out job resumes, write application essays, and seek advice from each other and from mentors. U-Lead students report that they find acceptance, camaraderie, support, and friendship by participating in (for now, virtual) weekly meetings.

- ACT/SAT/ACCUPLACER Test Prep -

Every Tuesday and Thursday content-area specialists help students prepare for the ACT, SAT, and Accuplacer tests in math, writing, critical reading, and other content areas. We also help students register for test dates and apply for fee waivers. If fee waivers are unavailable, we help them pay for the test through donations.

- FAFSA Completion and Renewal -

- DACA Renewal -

Since so many of our students have mixed, TPS or DACA status, they may seek assistance in keeping their paperwork up to date. We discuss any policy changes that might affect them. There is no charge for helping students fill out the paperwork to apply. In some cases, U-Lead is able to help pay the application fee, thanks to donations .

- La Clinica in Lak’ech - Mental Health Counseling -

Under the management of Edward Delgado-Romero, a licensed psychologist, La Clínica in LaK'ech provides counseling and assessment to the Latinx population in both English and Spanish. At this time, they provide psychological and telehealth services. The clinic is staffed by doctoral students in psychology, interns from the MSW program in the School of Social Work UGA and undergraduate psychology interns (who do not see clients). Services are free. To obtain services, please call our number (706) 389-8462 and leave a voice message stating your name and contact details. We will contact you within 4-5 business days to determine the best way to support. More info in their website.

- U-Lead Scholarship for Qualifying Individuals -

Since most of our students are not permanent residents, many scholarships and sources of financial aid are unavailable to them. Our mentors help students find scholarships for which they are eligible, including the DreamUS, Bonner, and Golden Doors scholarships. We offer our students $500-$5000 scholarships funded by our generous donors and small grants, most recently from the Latino Community Fund. There are many other scholarships for students. Please click on the “More Scholarships” button for more scholarship information.

- Georgia College Advising Corps/Americorps -

The Georgia College Advising Corps works in high schools throughout Georgia to increase the number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students who attend and complete higher education. GCAC helps students find their way to college by working one-on-one with students as they navigate the complex college admissions process. U-Lead partners with GCAC representatives at high schools in Athens to ensure that students have access to the right information and resources.

- Mobile Clinic -

The Augusta University and University of Georgia Medical Partnership conducts a free clinic at the Oconee Street United Methodist Church 717 Building (White House across from the church) on certain Wednesdays. The clinic provides free primary care for under/uninsured patients. Adults, kids, or families who need general primary care or have specific problems that need to be addressed are welcome to come. Walk-ins are welcome. For more information, contact mpmobileclinic@uga.edu , phone number 706-308-4092.
